HOW TO LOCK UP YOUR BIKE
• Domarkyourbikeandtakeaphotoofitforfutureidentication.Then
for free or a minimal fee, register or license your bike at the local law-
enforcementofce.
• Dolockyourbiketosomethingsolidinavisibleplace.Don’tlockyourbike
through a chain-link fence – anyone with a set of wire cutters can easily

thievescanbreakthem.
• Douseundergroundparkinglotswithamplevideosurveillancecameras–
cameras are excellent deterrents.
• Dolockyourbikenexttootherbikeswherepossible.
• Dokeepanextrakeytoyourlockinasafeplace.Ifyoursisacombination
lock, keep the number in a secure place.
• Dorememberthatanounceofprotectionisworthapoundofcure.Thefew
momentsistakeseachtotimetolockupyourbikewillsaveyouthetime
and money it would take to replace your bike.
• Don’tparkyourbikeindarkalleys.Doselecthighlyvisiblelocationssuchas
busystreetsorinfrontofstores.Thievesarelesslikelytobotherwithyour
bikeifit’slockedoutintheopen.
• Don’tlockyourbikeinthesamespoteachday.Thieves“case”behaviour
patternsandthriveonpredictability.Dolockyourbikeinadifferentlocation
each day.
• Don’tletyourlockrust.Afrozenlockissimplydeadweight.Useaperiodic
squirtofWD-40tokeepyourlockinasgoodworkingorderasyourbike.
One-Lock Method
• Removethefrontwheelofyourbike(Pic.C,D)ormakesureyourlock
encircles the rim, not the spokes, of the wheel, as well as the bike frame
(Pic.B).
• Lockyourbiketoaxedobjectthatcannotbeeasilybroken,cutor
removed.Somethievesgosofarastoremoveboltsfromsignposts.Once
you’velockedyourbikearoundaseeminglysecurepole,thethiefsimply
lifts the post out of the ground and slips off the lock.
• Positionthekeyentrysoitfacestheground.
• Positionyourlockashighabovethegroundaspossibletomakeitharder
forathieftondleverageandtomakethelockobvioustopassersby.
• Removeunsecuredbikeparts,suchastheseat.
Multiple-Lock Method
• Alllockscanbebroken.Yourjobistopresentanillusionofabove-average
resistance,convincingathiefthatstealingyourbikewillrequiretoomuch
effort.
• UseamaximumU-lockorchainlockinconjunctionwithacablelock.
Chancesareathiefwillseetwolocksandmoveontoanothervictim.
• SetuptheU-lockaroundyourreartire,frameandsomexedobject.Then
snakethecablethroughyourfrontwheel,saddlerails,frameandtheU-lock
(Pic.A).Youmaystillwalkawayfeelingwary,butyou’llknowthatyoudid
the best you could.
HOW TO CARE FOR LOCKS
EveryOnGuardLockisruggedlybuiltforlonglifeandtrouble-freeservice.With
minimalcare,yourOnGuardLockwillprovidesecurityandsmoothoperationfor
many years to come.
Hereareafewtipsthatwillhelpyoukeepyourlockworkingefciently:
1. Lubricateyourlocksperiodicallywithalightmachineoil.Donotuse
graphiteinanyform!YourOnGuardLockisaprecisioninstrument,and
graphitemayactuallycausethelockingmechanismtostick.Applyoilin
both the keyway and shackle openings.
2. Locksusedoutdoorsmayrequireoccasionalcleaning.Todothis,submerse
themovernightinkerosene–letthemdrythoroughly–andapplyoil.
3. Whenalockisoperatedinfrequentlyorexposedtosevereweather
conditions,internalworkingpartsmaybecometight.Inthesecases,exert
a slight downward pressure on the shackle while the key is being turned.
Doingthis3or4timeswillrelieveanytensionandwillusuallyrestoreeasy
and normal operation of the lock.
4. Usecompressedairtohelpdislodgedebrisinthecylinder.
5. keep locking assembly out of dirt and sand, debris will hinder the
performance and function of your lock.
