Who’s that
rooting in the chicken mess?
Even the chickens are laughing about it, not only they are training for the chicken olympics, all
the other animals have got involved, so you have martens training with the mad march hares,
and the fox has got so involved in the „annoying hedgehogs“ discipline, that he’s even given up
chasing the geese. It’s no wonder then, that our favourite chickens have found a new game for
themselves.
(back sides)
Content:
45 animal cards (3 x 15 animal types)
19 chicken run cards (15 animal types,
2 each chicken poo and shovel)
The 19 chicken run cards are shuffled and spread across the table face down. Shuffle the 45
animal cards and deal them out equally to the players. With 2 or 3 players, each receives 15
animal cards.
With 4 players, they each get 11 cards, with 5, 9 cards, and with 6 players, each gets 7 cards. Any
cards left over are returned to the box. Each player places their cards in a face down pile in front
of them, without looking at them, they then pick up the first five cards.
Preparation:
The first player to get rid of all their cards wins.
Aim of the game:
„By Golly“ is played in a clockwise direction. The blindest hen starts (choose a
start player). The player whose turn it is, places an animal card from their hand
face up in front of them, and then turns over one of the chicken run cards.
If the two cards do not match each other, the player must take the animal card
back into their hand and turn the chicken run card back face down. The next
player now takes their turn.
If the two cards do match however, the player places their animal card to
one side and continues with their turn. The chicken run card that they turned over
remains face up. They can continue in this way until either they turn over two cards that do not
match, or they run out of cards in their hand.
The game:
Chicken mess and shovel:
When you’re grabbing things out of a chicken run, you can easily end up
with a claw full of chicken poo! Two of the chicken run cards show a pile
of chicken mess, and a player that turns over one of these, needs to find
a shovel quickly, so that they can bury it as fast as possible, before they
get covered in it! If a player turns over one of these chicken poo cards,
they must immediately turn over a second chicken run card.
There are three possible results:
a. Still lucky:
If the player finds a shovel, they pick up the animal card that they played, and their turn is over,
without them landing in the mess.
Any chicken run cards that they have turned over, remain face up until the end of their turn,
when they are all turned back face down and the player draws sufficient cards from the pile in
front of them to make their hand back up to 5 cards (if possible).
Lucky hens: If the player has more than one copy of a card in their hand, they may discard all
these cards if they manage to turn over the matching chicken run card.
b. A bit unlucky:
If the player turns over an animal card, they’re in the mess. In this case they must draw two cards
from a player or players of their choice and place the animal cards in their own hand. They also
take back the animal card they played, and their turn is over.
c. Really unlucky:
A really unlucky chicken is one that draws the second chicken poo card. They’ve really landed in
it, right up to their neck! They have to draw four cards from a player or players of their choice and
place the animal cards in their own hand. They also take back the animal card they played, and
their turn is over.
The game ends as soon as a player discards their
last animal cards. That player is the winner.
A little Bonus for those who’ve fallen in the mess: In all three cases, (a, b, c) the
player who landed in the mess, may shuffle around any chicken run cards that they
have turned over before they turn them back face down again. It is possible that
aplayer may finish their turn with more than 5 cards in their hand, as a result of
landing in the mess.
Game end:
